patsposter.jpg.jpg The modern rock band 311 will headline the annual St. Pat's Concert in Rolla on Saturday, March 15. Ballyhoo! is scheduled to be the opening act.

The concert, which begins at 6 p.m., will be held at the Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building, located at the corner of 10th Street and Bishop Avenue on the Missouri University of Science and Technology campus in Rolla.

Tickets go on sale for $15 to students only on Monday, Feb. 4. Students may buy student and general public tickets ($30) starting Thursday, Feb. 7. Beginning Saturday, Feb. 9, tickets will be made available to the general public.

311 incorporates a variety of music styles, including hip hop, alternative rock, punk, reggae and funk. Since the band's self-titled album in 1995, 311's singles have received significant radio play and the group has had success on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart.

The Rolla concert, which is part of Missouri S&T's annual St. Pat's Celebration, is sponsored by the St. Pat's Committee and the Missouri S&T Student Union Board.

Those attending the concert with student tickets will be required to show Missouri S&T identification at the door. For additional details, email concerts@mst.edu.

TGIBF: Thank God It's Burrito Friday

grotto1.jpg.jpg

Nothing says Friday like a big $2 burrito and maybe a PBR. That's why The Grotto is the unofficial home (at least on Fridays) of the Best Ever Blog, and one of the reasons why The Grotto is a long-time St. Pat's hang-out.

grotto2.jpg.jpg

grotto3.jpg.jpg

Fortified by two big $2 burritos, Mark is ready to go back out into the cold world and tackle the afternoon. Or maybe he could just really use a nap.

Leonardo made them all get on one side of the table

patsupper.jpg

Leonardo da Vinci called his famous painting of this picture "Last Supper with Wood Paneling." Incidentally, before the week was through, one of the court members would betray St. Pat.

Hey, we're just pulling these images out of the album located on the right side of this page. There are 1,151 photos in all. We used them (all of them) for the cover of the last issue of UMR Magazine (now Missouri S&T Magazine). You can find out how that cover was made and see a mosaic of Mona Lisa here.

But we still want some of your original St. Pat's pics for the blog. Send them to us at bestever AT mst dot edu.

Thanks to those of you who have been commenting!

If you're on campus...

Lambda Sigma Pi and the St. Pat's Celebration Committee are hosting the second annual St. Pat's door decorating contest for faculty and staff. Prizes will be given for first, second and third place for both individual and group doors. For participation packets, rules, or more information please email Erin Hayden at emhkt3@mst.edu with the subject line "Door Decorating Contest."

P.S. Any rumors about what band(s) will be coming to Rolla this year for St. Pat's?

It just doesn't matter!

We're not sure what year this is from, but it looks like the cast of Meatballs showed up at Gonzo Games.

A century of St. Pats

St. Patrick lived roughly 1,600 years ago and historians will tell you he wasn’t really Irish – he was probably Welsh. Legend has it that he was kidnapped as a teenager by pirates and taken to Ireland, where he was enslaved. He escaped and eventually became the patron saint of Ireland. (After becoming a Bishop, he went back to Ireland and ultimately died there.) He was never an engineer and there haven’t been snakes in Ireland since before the last ice age.

You see, there is a big difference between St. Patrick and St. Pat.

Sweatshirt project -- 2003

pat2003.jpg

So we're serious about doing this sweatshirt project thing. Here's 2003. Send us a photo of you in your old St. Pat's sweatshirt at bestever AT mst dot edu. Dont' forget to tell us what year the shirt is from. Also, let us know if it's OK to use your name in the caption.

It's a dirty job...

But somebody has to do it. More on the street painting tradition here.

Funds sought for new St. Pat statue

patstat.jpg
The St. Pat's Board is working with the St. Pat's Fund Advisory Board (Miner Alumni Association) to raise money for St. Pat's at Missouri S & T. Their number one project is to erect a Bronze St. Pat's Statue outside on campus. This has been a dream of many since the original statue was given to UMR by the St. Pat’s Board in the fall of 1970. The existing St. Pat Statue in the library will be the basis for the mold of the new statue. The new statue will be placed near the St. Pat's Puck or some prominent area on campus.

The estimated cost of the statue project is $70,000 or more. If interested, your donation may be made to the St. Pat’s Fund throught the Miner Alumni Association. Donations are tax deductible. Please put St. Pat's Fund in the memo section of your check. If your employer has a matching gift program, check with them to see if your donation qualifies for matching funds.

All donations are appreciated and will receive the following special recognitions:

All Donors to the St. Pat’s Fund will receive a distinctive serially-numbered lapel pin.

Sustaining Donors ($1,000-$4,999) will receive a framed and mounted photograph of the completed statue.

Patron Donors ($5,000 and up) will be honored with their names on a bronze plaque on the statue base.

If you have any questions or want additional information, contact Eric Dunning or Dan Hinkle at St.PatsFund AT gmail dot com.

Sweatshirt project

Help us make a photo library of every St. Pat's sweatshirt design since ???? We'll post photos on the blog as we receive them. Once we use a photo from a particular year, say 1982, we won't post another from that year. We'll keep going until as many years as possible are represented. Send your images to bestever AT mst dot edu. Make sure we can see the design on your shirt in the pic.

Abysmal baptismal

For decades, it was tradition to dunk student knights into a pool filled with gross ingredients. Andrew Careaga has a pretty good description of what was in it...

A mix of stale beer, leftovers from fraternities and eating clubs, the occasional road kill, and other ingredients too bizarre or sickening to mention...

The soupy pool of vomity stuff even had a name; it was called Alice. Nobody on campus remembers exacly why it was called Alice (if they do know, they're not talking). Andy C. recently resolved to solve the mystery once and for all. He didn't succeed, but read the story anyway.

Appetite for destruction and/or burritos

This is the first ever post on the Best Ever Blog. It might look pretty tame right now, but this blog is going to be a beast that promises to have a big appetite. Please keep it well fed by submitting comments as we approach the 100th anniversary of St. Pat's in Rolla. We welcome your stories and photos and ideas and questions about everything green. We'd especially like photos of you in old St. Pat's sweatshirts. If you want to send us stuff that you can't leave in the comments section below, email us at bestever AT mst dot edu. In the meantime, we'll be frequently updating this site with weird, informal and informative St. Pat's stuff you can't find anywhere else.

P.S. The unofficial headquarters of the Best Ever Blog is, of course, the Grotto, home of Burrito Fridays.

P.P.S. Those of us here at the Best Ever Blog live by -- but do not necessarily endorse -- Doc Holliday's sentiments in the great American film classic Tombstone: We have not yet begun to defile ourselves!

P.P.P.S. Check out the last ever issue of UMR Magazine, which was dedicated to St. Pat's. (P.P.P.P.S. Now it's called Missouri S&T Magazine.)
